For many years, REST has been a de-facto industry standard architectural style for designing web APIs. However, GraphQL and gRPC have recently emerged to address some of the limitations of REST. Each of these API approaches comes with substantial benefits and some trade-offs.In this presentation, we'll look at each of the three API architectural styles. We’ll compare them and check their pros and cons. Then, we’ll do a live demo and build a simple service using all three API approaches in Spring Boot.Finally, we'll look into several criteria that should be considered before deciding on one approach for your application. As there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, we'll see how different approaches can be mixed on different application layers.

Daniel Strmečki, author
Daniel Strmečki is a Java and AEM Solution Architect with a strong focus on quality, modularity, and reusability. He works as Director Digital Platforms – Adobe at IBM iX Studio Varaždin, Croatia. In 2019, he earned a PhD degree in Information and Communication Sciences from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of organization and informatics. Throughout his career, he gained experience in software development, solution design, project, and people management. Daniel holds 18 professional certifications from IBM, AWS, Adobe, Oracle and Scrum Alliance. He is a frequent presenter on developer conferences and has published more than 20 Java tutorials on Baeldung. Daniel has an open, ambitious, stubborn, and perfectionist personality. He likes sports, modern technology, motivated colleagues, and well-defined processes.
Dominik Lacković, coauthor
Dominik Lacković is Adobe Experience Manager developer/technical architect employed at IBM iX as Head of Adobe for Croatian teams. Passionate about Java, Git, and general web development, and specialized in architecture, performance, optimization, and digital assets management.
