At the end of last year Gartner predicted that by 2018, 30% of our interactions with technology will be through "conversations" with smart machines. But what are chatbots? Quite simply programs that simulate people in a messaging conversation. By designing a chatbot for a particular task or service and utilizing some of the AI technologies, they can really simplify time consuming task, make it easier to find information or remove the need for human intervention. But while this may be true for well understood tasks, complex or ad hoc operations and questions will still require human intervention. In this practical session we will look at the steps of building chatbots using Oracle Cloud Platform services. We will use Facebook Messenger as the messaging application and we will configure chatbot conversation flows, connect to APIs to transfer data between the chatbot and back end systems and we will code program logic in Node.js. We will also demonstrate steps for how to seamlessly hand over the chatbot conversation to a human agent when necessary.
